Careers for engineers
Engineering students come to school with careers in mind, so they flocked to meet employers from industry Oct. 2 and 3 in the Hall Building.
Opportunities have steadily been increasing in civil engineering, which had been latent for a number of years, thanks to retirements and to new government infrastructure programs. Similarly, there is growth at last in the need for computer scientists, after the slump following the tech crash.
Career Advisor Darlene Hnatchuk said employers realize they have to be more competitive, and they are meeting the challenge with higher starting salaries.
André Gagnon, coordinator of Career Placement Services, said this year’s Engineering and Computer Science Career Fair could have been staged over one day if the university had a big enough venue. Students packed three workshops in preparation for the fair, and the logistics were ably handled by students of the Engineering and Computer Science Association (ECA).
