Call for Nominations: Honorary Degrees

The Honorary Degree and Convocation Committee (HDCC), a joint Board/Senate committee, is seeking nominations for candidates for honorary degrees.

All nominations for honorary degrees are screened by the Honorary Degree and Convocation Committee and approved by the Board of Governors upon recommendation of Senate.

To be eligible, a nominee must have sufficient stature and recognition to ensure that the awarding of an honorary degree brings credit to Concordia University and to the academic community as a whole, and upholds the values that lead to the advancement of learning and to the pursuit of greater knowledge. In particular, when evaluating nominations, the following criteria will be considered: outstanding achievements in community service; scholarly distinction; outstanding contributions to a profession or discipline; international reputation; inspiration to students.

It should be noted, however, that honorary degrees will not be given to current members of the faculty, the administration, the Board of Governors, students, and staff, and are usually not given to holders of public office.

Each nomination must be accompanied by a nomination form containing (i) a detailed curriculum vitae, and (ii) a statement by the nominator explaining why Concordia University should award a degree to the nominee.

The nomination form can be downloaded at: secretariat.concordia.ca/pdf/Nomination_Form.pdf [PDF]

The document outlining the selection criteria is at: secretariat.concordia.ca/pdf/Criteria_honorands.pdf [PDF]

Nominations should be sent to Danielle Tessier, Director, Board and Senate Administration, Room GM 801-23, SGW Campus, or via email at danielle@alcor.concordia.ca before December 19, 2008.
