It is with regret we report the passing of Michael Marsden on Oct. 21, his 79th birthday. A friend and an invaluable faculty member of the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment from 1965 until his retirement in 1995, a celebration of his life was held on Nov. 2 at his home in the Eastern Townships.
Marsden was a man with a keen interest in many aspects of life around him. His adventurous spirit led to working in the Arctic to managing the library of The Arctic Institute of North America. Later, he worked in East Africa where his skills in geomorphology contributed to ongoing research into environmental changes.
Marsden had a wide circle of friends throughout the university and, after his retirement, in his local community in the Townships. Always offering insightful contributions to discussions, he often assisted others in their work. He was an impressive teacher, devoting a large share of his time to informal tutoring of students, inspiring many to pursue careers in the environmental sciences, oftentimes with great success.
We extend our condolences to his four children, Kathy, John, Mungo and Henry. His wife, Joan, predeceased him.
